2008 NORTH AMERICAN JUNIOR YOUNG RIDERS CHAMPIONSHIPS
COLORADO HORSE PARK
PARKER, CO
JULY 30 - AUGUST 3, 2008
Description
One of the ultimate goals of the Area I Young Rider program is to field and sponsor teams to represent the Area at the North American Young Rider Championships. The team application and selection process in which Young Riders participate, and the event’s championship format, are designed to prepare them to one-day represent the United States in international competition. Many Young Riders’ first exposure to the NAJYRC is as a groom. Grooms, typically candidates who are not selected to ride on the team, gain valuable behind-the scenes competition experience, and participate in the same camaraderie and team bonding experience as the riders.
The most successful NAJYRC team members not only demonstrate superior riding and horse management skills, but also the ability to work effectively with teammates, coaches, grooms and organizers. It’s important that Young Riders recognize the huge commitment that Area I members make in supporting their NAJYRC program through donations of time and money, and that they fully appreciate the opportunity this support provides.

COACHING, SELECTION PROCESS, AND SCHEDULE
NAYRC team selection is designed to mirror, in important aspects, the U.S. team selection process. Team candidates are identified by a group of area coaches who, because of their active status in Area I and throughout the East coast, are able to view each horse and rider on multiple occasions. This year those selectors are: John Bourgoin, Jane Hamlin, Suzi Gornall, and Stephie Baer. After observing candidates at a series of sanctioned events,
a mandatory outing, and a candidate training session, the selectors, in consultation with the team veterinarian (TBA), make their recommendations to the Chef d'Equip (Nici Hornblower) and coach (TBA). Team members and alternates are then chosen to train for 10 days in the lead-up to the championships. It is at the end of this training session that the chef and coach make their final team selection, and riders should be prepared for potential last-minute changes to the line-up as the most sound and appropriate members at this point are chosen to ship to Colorado.
Please welcome Ashley MacVaugh, former Area I YR, as the new Area I YR Coach. Ashley
successfully completed the Rolex Kentucky Four Star three times (18th, 20th & 20th place) on the
same horse, and finished the Burghley Four Star in 36th place in very wet, difficult conditions.
In 2003, she made the Pan American Games team, placing fifth individually. We're looking forward
to working with her this upcoming year. Anyone planning on trying out for this year's team please
send in your team application and proposed competition schedule as well as qualifying
competitions.

BUDGET
The Area I Young Riders goal is to fund the NAJYRC program to the extent that personal finances do not limit a rider’s ability to seriously contest the championships. Just as with our U.S. teams, Young Riders does not fund expenses for horses and riders to qualify for the championships, but they do fund most expenses related to the pre-NAYRC training session and the championships themselves.
The program’s ability to fund these expenses and maintain financial impartiality is dependent on the success of our fundraising and sponsorship programs.
The money raised is used to fund the following:
- Coaching salary and expenses
- Expenses for program officials
- Candidate training camp expenses
- Team training camp expenses
- Shipping to NAYRC for horses, team members and grooms
- Team rider apparel (polo shirts, t-shirts, jackets, helmet covers, jog outfits)
- Stable area (tack stall set-up, tent, banners)
- NAYRC Entry Fees
Team Candidates are responsible for the following:
- Helping raise funds through private donations or sponsorship of goods or services for the team
- FEI fees
- Transportation to and from the clinic and training session
- Food at the training session
- Food and lodging at the NAJYRC
- Grooms expenses at the NAJYRC
- *Veterinary expenses that may incur at the NAJYRC
SPONSORSHIP
Each year, Area I sponsors contribute goods and services, ranging from t-shirts worn by the riders and grooms to stabling for the training session, used to equip and fund our NAYRC effort. Anyone who has ever been to the NAYRC surely has recognized the team spirit and camaraderie enhanced by matching outfits, even down to the tape color on gallop boots cross-country day. (For a list of our 2007 sponsors, click here.)
This year, the program is looking for donations of the following:
- T-shirts for riders, grooms, coach, chef, and vet
- Polo shirts for riders, grooms, coach, chef, and vet
- Wind jackets
- Helmet covers
- Saddle pads for dressage, cross-country and show jumping phases
- Schooling pads
- Money to cover team-related expenses at the championships
- Shipping to event
- Lodging at championships
- Screenprinting and embroidery services
- Banners and printing
2008 Sponsor Benefits will include:
- A listing on the Young Riders page of the Area I web site, which in 2006 received 1000+ visitors per day in-season from extremely qualified horse enthusiasts interested to learn about your goods and services. If available, links can be established to your business web site, giving customers instant access to your business.
- At North American Junior Young Riders CHampionships, at Lexington, Virginia, we’ll:
- Prominently hang your company banner (provided by you) at the Area I stable area,
- List your business on our custom-printed sponsor t-shirts worn throughout the competition by grooms and support staff, and
- Display your business name on our sponsor thank you banner (provided by Area I YRs).
- In addition, sponsors wishing to donate apparel and equipment worn by riders and horses can have their business logos screen-printed or embroidered, along with the Area I Young Riders logo (at sponsor’s expense) onto t-shirts, polo shirts, caps, pads and sheets (or anything else that might be appropriate).
- Following the Championships: Area I Young Riders will place a display advertisement in The Chronicle of the Horse, recognizing your sponsorship, and providing national exposure for you in the country’s premier horse magazine.
SPONSORSHIP QUESTIONS? TBA.
Q and A
Q: Do I have to be a member of the USEA (United States Eventing Association) to be a member of Area I Young Riders?
A: Yes, because the Area I Young Riders program is sanctioned and supported by the USEA, the national governing body for the sport of Eventing.
Q: How is the Young Riders program different from other programs, like Pony Club?
A: While Young Riders and Pony Club share some aspects, like an emphasis on safety, horse management, and fun, Young Riders focuses specifically on the sport of Eventing, and is intended to prepare riders and their horses for Eventing competition.
Q: Do I have to be a member of Area I Young Riders to compete at area events?
A: No, but area I Young Riders benefit from the education and support that Young Riders provides, including course walks and training opportunities, as they begin and progress in their eventing careers.
Q: Do I have to compete at the NAYRC if I’m an Area I Young Rider?
A: No, for some competing at the NAYRC isn’t a goal.
Q: How is the Young Rider program funded? How much goes to the Development Program, and how much to the NAYRC Program?
A: The YR Program is funded entirely through donations made by Area I members and friends, and new for this year, the Maui Jim USEA Young Rider raffle. The amount of funds going to each program depends on the demands, for instance, whether we field one or two (a one-star and a two-star) NAYRC teams.
Q: How are the NAYRC teams chosen?
A: Area I employs the same model for team selection as the U.S. Event team. A group of selectors, Area I coaches familiar with most of the potential team members and their horses, observe candidates at a series of optional and mandatory qualifying events and clinics. Their recommendations, along with those of the team vet, are passed on to the team coach and chef, who then make final team decisions at the pre-NAYRC training session.
