The Area I Young Riders program is offered through the USEA for riders twenty-one years of age and younger. The purpose of the program is to encourage our younger members to become involved in the sport of Eventing and perhaps continue this involvement into their adult lives. Our organization seeks to promote and create a love of the sport, as well as a true appreciation and understanding of the horse, while at the same time fostering the wonderful relationship that can develop between horse and rider. Further, involvement in this program helps to instill in young riders important moral values, such as responsibility and work ethic, as they grow into mature adults.

The program is open to all riders twenty-one years of age and younger and accommodates riders of all levels. Our hope is to generate involvement early on, helping our lower level riders to realize their goals and eventually achieve success at the higher levels through dedication, hard work and discipline.

We offer team opportunities from the Beginner Novice through CCI** levels. The ultimate team opportunity is to represent Area I at the one- and two-star North American Junior and Young Riders Championships (NAJYRC). The Young Riders program, however, is about a lot more than competing. We offer clinics and camps where participants can make new friends, develop riding and horsemanship skills, and experience a sense of camaraderie with their peers. We also cultivate commitment and team work through group fund raising efforts and volunteer work. We believe every Area 1 rider 21 years of age and under should be a member of this program. So join us!

Any rider under age 21 who lives in Area I can join Area I Young Riders
The most common question I am asked as Area I Young Rider Coordinator is, “Do I have to want to go to the North American Junior and Young Riders Championships to be a member?” The answer is “No”. Only a handful of our members will actually get the chance to ride on one of our Championship teams. That is not to say that it isn’t a goal of many of our members. It is a great goal. But it is certainly not the only thing our Young Riders program offers. We are an educational program dedicated to helping all our members move up the levels of eventing safely and creating experiences that promote teamwork, good sportsmanship and camaraderie. When you become a member you are eligible to attend our clinics and camps where you will have fun with other members who share your passion for eventing, you will receive e-newsletters with information about our program offerings and tips from area trainers. And if you want you can compete for a spot on a Young Rider team. So join us!

To be a member of Area I Young Riders you must be a member of the USEA.
Membership is $50 per year for Training level and below, $75 per year for Preliminary and up.

Young Rider Clinic with Jerry Schurink A Huge Success!

This past Saturday we had our first encounter with our new Young Rider team coach, Jerry Shurink. Jerry started out the day telling us about his
riding experience, and how he became the head coach at UMass. He also shared his thoughts about what he sees the Young Rider program grow into
under his care. He stressed the fact that we need to develop a program from the lower levels up, and that it will take time to make the program
strong. This philosophy is shared by the program co-coordinators as well. We have stressed over and over that the USEA Area I Young Rider program
is for all levels, from Beginner Novice up.

The clinic was amazing. Each rider rode twice, and we had two lectures. The morning lesson was dressage, and in the afternoon everyone jumped.
Lunch was provided, and gave everyone an opportunity to socialize. We all realized how much we have in common, and that we are all not alone out
there.

The day went much to quickly, and soon it was time to leave. The girls all exchanged phone numbers, and promised to keep in touch with each other.
